This week, the 11U Johnston Panthers defeated the Providence Packers 33-6.

The Panthers’ offense came out strong once again. After receiving the ball on the 20-yard line, quarterback Dimetri Iafrate handed the ball to Dante Ricci for a 20-yard run. On fourth down and long, Ryan Schino snapped the ball to Iafrate, who ran 40 yards for a Panthers’ touchdown.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Panthers’ special teams showed some trickery when kicker Alex Rhodes delivered an onside kick, which was recovered by Iafrate. Then the offense put the ball in fullback Isaiah DeBritto’s hands, and he broke free for a 28-yard run, fighting off several Packers along the way.

The next play saw the Panthers throw an interception, only to have Ricci quickly wrestle the ball back.

With the Panthers on the 20-yard line, Iafrate pitched the ball to Ricci, who ran in for the touchdown. The extra point was caught by CJ Ragosta. Going into halftime, the Panthers had a strong 13-0 lead.

The second half saw the Panthers’ defense take command.

Led by Phil Costantini, Iafrate, Jake Lincourt, Antonio Gemma, Jonathon D’Angelo, DeBritto, Dante Iafrate and Carlos Alfaia, it forced the Packers to punt, leaving the Panthers’ offense with great field position.

After the first play produced no gain in yards, the Panthers’ offense showed great teamwork as Todd DiLullo snapped to Andrew Picard, who tossed the ball to Matthias Barros. Barros would throw the ball to Dante Iafrate, who ran the ball to the Packers’ 16-yard line.

Barros had a 5-yard run on the next play and Joseph Domenico fought his way to the 1-yard line on another hand off.

Quarterback Andrew Picard called his own number on the next play, running the ball in for the touchdown. The extra point was scored by Dylan Silva.

The Panthers’ defense gave up an 80-yard touchdown on the next series. However, the Packers’ extra point was intercepted by Jake Lincourt.

The Panthers’ defense rebounded by holding the Packers to minimal yardage.

DeBritto would find the end zone shortly after, giving the Panthers a 26-6 lead.

Johnston went on to defeat Providence 33-6.

9U Panthers handle Jets

The 9U Johnston Panthers defeated the North Providence Jets 32-0 to up their record to 4-2 on the season.

The stalwart defense of the Panthers was at it again, shutting out the Jets in the win. The defensive play of Ethan Placella, Alex Fedorchuck, Joseph Matteo, Derek Zant, Benji Soe and T.J. Goron sewed up the middle of the field, tackling any Jet trying to get through.

Jimmy Barnett, Domenic Esposito, Jayden Testa and Brandon Testa combined for several tackles on Jet players trying to get outside.

The tenacious offensive play of the line led by Ryan Audino, JJ Lachapelle, Robert D’Alessio and Joseph Cuoco held the Jet defense at bay, allowing the Panthers to score five touchdowns. T.J. Thaddeus and his shifty running accounted for three, James Pastore’s determination to get outside allowed him to score on a 20-yard run and quarterback Matt Clements scored the fifth touchdown.

Clements dropped back to pass but found no one open, forcing him to take off running. He eluded several Jet defensive players, avoiding a loss of yardage with an impressive 30-yard run for the score. Michael Cavros added two extra points for the Panthers.
