Briarcliffe Gardens offers new approach to living with Alzheimer's
At a time when many in the health care industry are waiting to see what reform will bring, one local businessman forged ahead to design, construct and open the doors to Briarcliffe Gardens, LLC, "A New Concept Alzheimer’s Assisted Living Residence" on the 28-acre Briarcliffe Healthcare Campus in Johnston.
Prior to breaking ground in November of 2008, Briarcliffe Gardens’ owner Akshay K. Talwar researched the project for over four years, visiting more than 30 Alzheimer’s facilities throughout the country. He worked closely with architects and designers to ensure the details supported his vision.
“The unique need of Briarcliffe Gardens’ residents, each living with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease, was my primary consideration in every aspect of this project,” Talwar said. “Our Program for Daily Living, combined with innovative and unique design has created the best Alzheimer Assisted Living Residence in the country.”
The 20,000-square foot, 43-bed facility is next door to Briarcliffe Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation.
By engaging in one-on-one interaction and group activities, the facility provides mental, physical and spiritual connections.
It looks like a home, both outside and inside. Fresh air, diffuse sunlight and uplifting colors were incorporated into the design to enhance the lifestyle of individuals with memory impairment.
Elegant and comfortable, the living spaces include many unique features such as Nick’s 24 Hour Diner, where residents have an alternative dining space and 24/7 access to coffees, teas, sodas and snacks.
The Broadway Cinema runs newly released films and features authentic, plush theatre seating as well as a popcorn machine. The Sun Room, with a bamboo floor and views of the private garden, is the perfect place for quiet reflection or reading. The Salon at The Gardens features a full-service salon and barber services.
The Fitness and Wellness Center features carefully selected, fitness equipment appropriate for residents with early to mid stage Alzheimer's disease. In addition, events and classes like chair yoga, and Wii Fit therapy are consistently offered.
Talwar reports that Briarcliffe Gardens has been well received by health care practitioners as well as families requiring the unique and comprehensive assisted living support provided at Briarcliffe Gardens.
“Briarcliffe Gardens is truly state-of-the-art assisted living,” said Medical Director Dr. John Stoukides. “I am very pleased that I am already seeing improvements in several of my patients who have recently moved into the facility. The staff is really great.”
